#FeelTheLove. Scroll your Instagram grid or browse Facebook on 14th February, and you’ll find endless Valentine’s promotions. No brands miss out on the opportunity. Even Apple (hardly known for its passion) runs a social media campaign that brands its products with language emphasising love, passion, and creativity.

Create a catchy hashtag that captures your brand’s products and adds a dash of romance. Think:

  • #DateNightDressses
  • #LoveNotesStationary
  • #CandleLitLovers
  • #CuddleMePlus
  • #MugnificentLove

There are even some existing trends you can jump on. ‘Galentine’s Day’ is a day for girlfriends to meet up with their besties. Targeted at women, it occurs every 13th February and should be a fun day in your social media calendar.

Bundle Your Products

Upselling your products means coming up with ingenious ways to market for the holidays. Bundling a group of products under the label ‘Just for Her’ or ‘Just for Him’ can create easy gifts for lovers on the lookout.

For example, if you sell luxurious bathroom essentials, pair up your products for an indulgent evening. Or create a special Valentine’s Day sale by bundling a bottle of wine with some other food goodies – the perfect date night combo.

That also means treating themselves to something special – be it clothes, earrings, lipstick, socks, or a new shirt. 

It’s hard to define a Valentine’s Day treat, but you know it when you see it. It could be a gift for ‘staying in,’ including chocolates, hot water bottles, candles, bath bombs, or even a cocktail shaker.

Don’t restrict your thinking – Valentine’s Day gifts come in all shapes and sizes. What matters most is your messaging. Small businesses have so much to offer Valentine’s shoppers – you just have to let them know!

2. Gift for Loved Ones

Don’t limit yourself to traditional gift ideas. In fact, bonus points if you can come up with a clever alternative to the standard fare of chocolates, bath products, and flowers. Customised or personalised mementoes, in particular, can see a significant markup compared to their generic counterparts. Explore gift ideas that symbolise cherished moments between friends and family. 

4. Treat YOURSELF

As a small business owner, you’ll know that your customers aren’t all paired up like penguins. Single people constitute a large part of your customer base that you’d be foolish to ignore. There’s an obvious solution: create a ‘treat yourself’ theme.

But you can also be a bit more creative. Does your small business sell crafting kits? Someone’s Valentine could be an avid crafter, or it’s just a fun present for a parent or grandparent. Your branding: “Valentine’s Day Sale: It’s Not Just Love; It’s Lovely.”

6. Don’t Forget the Pets!

Yes! We’re talking about pets again. People LOVE their pets – and it’s one of the fastest growing sectors of Valentine’s Day’s retail market.

Gifts for pets – like heart-shaped collars, oversized red cushions, or cutesy pet treats – can become top sellers. That doesn’t mean you have to cater for pets on Valentine’s Day. But if you do, go big!

Lots of small businesses stock items for pets – some people even buy a card for their pets. Keep your messaging on showing your pet some love. ‘For 365 days, they’re yours; on Valentine’s, be theirs.’ 

Honestly – I can’t emphasise this enough: forget pets at your peril.
