Podcast show notes

The difference between being a designer/maker and building a brand with Sabira Silcock

In episode 153 of The Resilient Retail Game Plan, I speak to Sabira Silcock of sustainable jewellery brand, SKEN Studios. Handmade in Manchester, Sabira produces fun and playful jewellery with personality, as well as running workshops and creating more bespoke pieces. Today she shares her journey from designer/maker to brand-builder, the story behind the rapid growth of SKEN Studios and the lessons she’s learnt along the way.

Throughout the course of our conversation, we discuss operating on a budget, trading skills and services and allowing your product design to be informed by how you want to run your business.

We also talk about baking sustainability into your brand values, the benefits of a made-to-order business model regarding cash flow and production timelines and being resilient in the face of equipment meltdowns and postal problems.
